Note that the Winter 2007 and start of term Fall 2007 surveys began with IRB consent forms that are not included here. Also, we refer to the wikis as blikis in these surveys because that is what we had started calling them in our classes.

17. At the start of the class, what, if anything, made you nervous or doubt your ability to succeed?

  • I was concerned that I was not a good creative" writer."
  • not familiar with the new class setting. two instructors vs one. reading unkown literature and wondering if it would be interesting at all.
  • I was more concern with all the reading since I am dyslexic and found that the on line book and using the unabridged DVDs helped me more with my reading then my writing. I can always get someone to proof my writing, I can't have someone proof what I understand in the reading except through the class interaction. The book was written so long ago, I had no idea what some of the dialogue use back then meant. I was also concern with getting all the assignments done in time during the bad winter we had during that quarter. I was nervous I would not be able to fight the snow & the intense homework. I am not sure if I would have been able to do this class as a junior college student. Bliki was not the easiest thing to learn along with the curriculum, it did made it easyer to keep in touch with the junior college students only.

18. Why do you think you did or did not succeed in this course?

  • I succeeded in this course because I broadened my writing skills and came to the realization that I can be creative"!"
  • I believe I succeed in the course due to the instrustors. Their expertise and knowledge opened many windows that enabled me to not only understand the chosen literature but also see it from a different perspective. Having two instructors in my opinion was excellent and would do it again without any hesitation.
  • I have found now that I am paying for my own schooling, I am more dedicated to do well. Time management was so important in this course, since I do have a job, a life, a home to care for & the bitter winters of Chicago. I believe I did well because of my understanding friends and family support, my strong determination to be a life long learner keeps me motivated also.

  • 24 Chicago City College (Wright or Truman)
  • 6 The School for New Learning

8. What, if anything, makes you nervous or doubt your ability to succeed in this course?

  • n/a
  • The grading on essays.
  • I tend to get lazy sometimes.
  • I'm a first year college student so this whole college thing is new to me so I am just a little bit nervous.
  • Nothing, I am taking this class as a gen ed requirement for the college I currently attend.
  • Work - Life balance.
  • I am a little bit nervous about my writing because it is hard for me.
  • im also registered this term for a foundations class with depaul, so i will be very busy between those two classes and work
  • Since today is the first day of class, I am just a bit confused about how the enourmous amount writing will be taken care of in a timely manner. I am confident to do my best and keep up wit the course.
  • I am never satisfied with my writing.  I struggle to get my point across.  I primarily enrolled in this course to have a better grasp of how to write and the order in which it should be written.
  • I really feel fine, I do not feel nervous
  • The deadlines and English being my second language.
  • My Ability to apply my thoughts onto paper.
  • I really feel fine, I do not feel nervous
  • I have a problem with punctuality. I am usually tardy to everything. I think that by being late I will not be able to take good notes because I'll miss part of the lecture. I am confident in my writing skills, but I feel nervous about the large amount of page numbers we have to write. I want to turn everything in on time and not procrastinate.
  • nothing.
  • Giving myself enough time and applying myself
  • I am a little bit nervous because I am a first year college student but I feel I will have success in this course.
  • Nothing at this time
  • I am not usually one to volunteer to speak in class, or ask questions, however, I am determined to go out of my way to ask questions and challenge my classmates to make this class a fantastic experiecne.
  • The fact that the class is online, which really clashes with my schedule. I'd feel alot more confident if this course was availible in the morning.
  • There seems to be alot of homework given out in this class and I tend to procrastinate.  To solve this I need to make sure that I turn in my assignments on time.
  • The only thing that i believe will stop me from succeeding in this course is myself. I believe that i am able to preform well, but sometimes i lack the motivation or effort.
  • I am not very nervous about this class. I feel that if I try hard and ask for help I will do fine. I dont like writing essays but I feel this course will hopefully change that. And I also hope that my writing skills will improve.
  • I am concerned about lack of time to complete homework. I work full time. I have three kids (1 preteen, 2 teenagers). I am caretaker and guardian of my sister; she has Down Syndrome. I am a little stressed, lack support and sleep. I worry about many issues and sometimes this interferes with my ability to focus & concentrate! It's been many years since I have been in school and I find it hard to fall into the college pace!   Also, when I asked about and signed up for this course, I was not informed that this was a Bridge Program or the structure of the class, other than it was a little condensed". Not so for me, this course requires a lot of time outside of class. It is assumed that everyone has a computer or easy access to internet, understandably so, but not everybody can afford to have one. I borrowed one; I am not at liberty to go to a neighbor or friend's house and I don't always have time to wait on lists to access one at the library. Had I been given more accurate information, I would have taken the non condensed course! This, I hope, would have given me the opportunity to transition into the college setting and increase of pace.   I don't want to complain because I know I am not the only one with (these) issues,  so I am trying. I need to adjust, so, in the interim I will be working towards reorganizing my time and schedule. I don't want to quit; I like this class, my classmates and both teachers."
  • Writing has always been difficult for me.  But I intend to get what I can from this class

9. What grade do you expect to receive in this class and why?

  • A
  • in a range b-a
  • b or a because i will try my best to get where i want.
  • I expect at least a B because I'm confident in my writing and I believe that I'm a good writer.
  • A, because I plan to work really hard.
  • A--because I expect to complete all coursework correctly and on time and I feel confident in my reading comprehension and writing skills. I do not expect to have a problem with my participation in class.
  • A I always strive to do my best.
  • I need an A" to bring my GPA up."
  • i expect an A becuase i really enjoy english classes and i really like the crucible
  • I will be heading for an 'A'. I have no choice but to get an 'A' and I am confident enough to secure an easy or hard 'A' in this course.
  • I expect to pass the class.  I plan on fulfilling the requirements and becoming more confident in my writing so an A or B would be great!  It would certainly help me in future classes where a paper is required to pass.
  • Hopefully a B.  I will do my best to get it.  English is my second lenguage and I think I still have much to learn.
  • C,B
  • A. Thats the grade I want to achieve.
  • Hopefully a B.  I will do my best to get it.  English is my second lenguage and I think I still have much to learn.
  • I expect to receive an A because I am going to study hard, turn everything in on time, and give it my all on every assignment I receive.
  • I want to get a B in this class because I will do my best, and hopefully maybe get an A if i do good enough.
  • B
  • I expect to receive an A in this class because I plan to work hard.
  • A.....Plan on working hard
  • I expect to recieve an A. I am an A student, and I feel that this class will be a fun challenge, I look forward to finding my strengths and weaknesses.
  • An A, because I've taken AP English in high school, and I was known in class for my good essays and participation.
  • I am aiming at an A because if I aim for something lower I may get a grade thats even lower.
  • An A because I will put as much effort as I can into my classwork.
  • I expect to receive an A, because i know i am a bright student and have the ability to get an A, and i have slacked off to much at this point that anything less isn't acceptable anymore.
  • I expect to recive an A because if I try hard go to class and do all my work correctly i diserve it.
  • Not sure what to expect.  I am striving for A or at least B.
  • and am hoping to get an A" because I need to get my GPA up."

10. Why do you think you have or have not succeeded in this course?

  • I think I've succeeded becuase I've been actively participating in the class. I've worked hard to do my assignments to the best of my ability.
  • I think i have succeeded because i feel that i gained a better knowledge of Jane Austens work, the 18th century and the roles of women in the 18th century, my own creative process, and i feel that my writing skills have improved since the beinging of the class.
  • I succeded in using the wiki as a new means for information and knowledge.
  • I really enjoyed this course. At first i thought it would be stressful to take a three hour class but it turned out to be a great learning experience. The small class size really contributed to my success in class.
  • I think that I have succeeded because the teachers helped guide me through the difficult adjustment from high school to college. Also because the class was so small i felt really connected to everyt=one and had alot of help.
  • I feel that i have gained a great deal of information that i did not have. It also has helped to improve my writing and reading skills
  • A better understanding of what the main topics and issues when is comes to women's rights.
  • The teachers were very helpful.
  • I think I succeded because I feel more confident in writing. I also enjoyed this course and assimilated with classmates.
  • i have started thinking outside the boxs and comparing more like from the past to now.
  • I have succeeded in this course because i am much more confident in my writing skills compared to before i took this course.
  • I worked hard and kept up with all my assignments. I liked using the bliki especially for the roup project. It made it easier to comminicate with each other.
  • I have succeeded in this class because of the teachers, class outline, and class participation.
  • I have succeeded in this course because I was well informed of the needed material for the class. The Bliki helped in providing that information.
  • I think that I succeeded because I worked hard and did my best effort to learn.
  • Input in this class was just amazing.  Feedback and support was present ine evry possible moment.  I strongly believe that if i would of failed this class it would have to be my ignorance and not being present at the classes.  I learned so much throughout this course.
  • I feel I succeeded for two reasons.  First, the effort I put into this course.  Secondly, the instructors themselves and the feedback they provided helped push me to be a better writer.
  • I would do better if I had more time and if I put more effort in this course. Unfortunately, two jobs of mine prevented me from it. I wish I had dropped this class and it some other time.
  • I have learned a lot in this course and am trying to apply what I learned in my every day writings. I have not successed in finding my style or steps that would make my writing easier and flow.
  • I have succeeded in this course because of the strong support from the teachers.  Both Peggy St. John and Suzanne Sanders were very open and flexible, both had a sincere interest that the students were comfortable with the homework and the classwork assigned each week.  The teachers were available for any questions and took time during class to clarify the topic for the class.
  • My success was in attending the classes, completion of work, and not giving up! I have also learned to be a little more confident in my writing. The other part of my success was both Suzanne's and Peggy's feedback and more importantly their understanding of a situation that would have affected my decision to continue the course.

11. What grade do you expect to earn in this course and why

  • I hope an A, but I'll settle for a B. Why? I've done the best that I know how to succeed in this class.
  • i expect to recieve an A because i have recieved top marks on all of my work, and i believe i showed a knowledge and appreciation for the material the teachers provided.
  • A c because I have some wiki projects i did not finish.
  • A or B, because I feel like I did very well
  • Not sure still have some work to turn in
  • Hopefully a B becuase a couple of my paper are late but I feel that I contributed to class significantly.
  • I am expecting a B because I have worked hard and felt like my writing has gotten better throughout the course.
  • I expect to get an A because I contributed myself to that course and I put all of my efforts.
  • b because i did good in my papers and i tried my best in writing but i would get some b's and a's once in a while.
  • i am expecting an A or B because i have recieved A's on all my essays and homework and have gotten feedback from my teachers
  • I expect an A in this course. I have been recieving A's on various assignments, participated in and attended class, and kept up with all the homework assignments.
  • I'm expecting an A in this class.  I have come to his conclusion by number crunching my grades up until this point in class.
  • I expect to get a B in this course. Early in the semester I was not as strong of a writer as I am now and may have messed up my grade then. If by some chance with my final paper and also my journals I can get an A that will be a great accomplishment for me
  • Probaby a B or C.  The reason is because English is not my first lenguage and I still have some trouble writing.
  • i am really happy just with the fact that i alone am aware of how much more confident i am in my writing skills.  Grade that i expect is high B and i know that if i only put a little more effort and time in this class i would of got an A.
  • A ior B+ because I put a lot of effort into this course.
  • I am hoping for a passing grade.
  • I expect to earn a fair grade of preferably an A+.  But it is up to me now and that is because I have the time to work on finding my voice.
  • Ideally, I would love an A.  I feel that I worked harder than I have in other courses but I have room to grow and need to continue working on my writing skills.
  • B it was hard to keep pace, butrconsidering that I have learned a great deal, I feel that, now,the quality of my work merits this.
